Fresno middle school student hospitalized after eating pot brownies

A middle school student was hospitalized after consuming marijuana-laced brownies that he said he purchased from a 12-year-old boy on a Fresno campus, police said Thursday.

The boy purchased the brownies Wednesday from the seventh-grade student at Sequoia Middle School for $5, ate them and then went to visit his dentist, Fresno Police Lt. Joe Gomez said.

During the visit, the boy lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital, where doctors confirmed he was under the influence of marijuana.

The boy, who also a seventh-grade student, told his mother about the brownies.

School administrators called police and the student accused of selling the brownies into their office Thursday. The boy had brought another batch of pot brownies -- all of which were individually wrapped -- to school, Gomez said.

The boy told police that his brother had a medical marijuana license and kept the brownies in their home refrigerator to treat his back pain.

The boy “knew the brownies were in the refrigerator and he decided to take them and sell them to other students at school to make some money,” Gomez said.

Although the student intended to the sell the brownies to “prospective customers” on campus, Gomez said, they “wanted the brownies for free” and his attempt was not successful.

The student, he said, will probably face drug charges.
