Rooms at the Masquerade Tower at Las Vegas’ Rio Hotel & Casino resort reopened Friday morning, more than a week after a fire and subsequent power failure forced the evacuation of all 900 rooms.

Fire and building inspectors on Thursday afternoon approved access to roughly 500 rooms on floors 22 to 39 of the resort at 3700 W. Flamingo Road. The approval came after restoration of power and a variety of safety checks.

The hotel has more than 2,500 rooms; only those in the Masquerade Tower were affected.

The VooDoo lounge, nightclub and restaurant — located on floors 40 and 41 — were expected to be open Friday evening. The zipline between the two towers also is expected to resume operations Friday.

After the hotel received a green light for reopening the tower rooms, housekeepers began the task of cleaning and preparing them for guests. The rooms had been off-limits since the morning of Dec. 29, when the failure of a backup generator left the 41-story tower in darkness.

Six people suffered minor injuries during the evacuation down darkened stairwells.

The power outage at the Rio, which did not affect the casino area or a second hotel tower, was blamed on water seepage after an electrical fire the previous afternoon. It triggered sprinklers in the area near the small fire.

Rooms on the lower floors reopened in stages over the last few days.
